If you’re a dog owner going on holiday it can be a nightmare, arranging someone to look after the dog can be time consuming and expensive. Not only this but many owners worry while on their holidays about their pets and the care they are receiving and this is why pet friendly holidays are becoming more and more important in the UK.
Dog friendly holidays at the Camelot hotel
So you’ve decided to go to Cornwall on your holidays and have found a dog friendly hotel (hopefully us!), but what to do? In Bude there is a wide range of options for the pet owner including going down to the beach, walking across the cliffs (I’d recommend a lead for some of the more excitable dogs out there!) and spending time at some of the many outdoor cafes and restaurants in the area.
To lend a hand though we thought we would compile a list of the local beaches and their rules towards dogs so you don’t get a whopping fine when you should be having fun! You can also look at our other blog about the beaches in Cornwall for a better idea of their individual charms.
Widemouth Bay Beach
A stunning and popular beach. For those wishing to explore, a few minute’s walk up the beach in either direction leads to a more secluded and sheltered part of the bay, with plenty of rock pools for the kids. Sometimes at high tide the beach is briefly separated into two by a low promontory, and at times like this it seems there are two different beaches, each with its own character and facilities.
- Dogs are allowed on this stunning beach but be careful of where you go as they’re only allowed on the Southern half of the beach. This can be a little confusing if you don’t pay attention but this is made easier when the beach is split in two by the tide!
Summerleaze Beach
Situated in the heart of Bude and a short walk from the hotel, this beach has it all. Except at low tide, the beach is sheltered from the heaviest of the surf by the breakwater. At low tide acres of sand are uncovered and the beach merges with the neighbouring beach, Crooklets.
- Dogs are allowed on this beach but must be kept on a lead between 10AM to 6PM from the 21st of May to the 30th of September.
Northcott Beach
Just a few minute’s drive from the Camelot Hotel, or a mile’s walk along the cliff tops, is Northcott beach. An attractive and quiet west facing beach. The higher parts of the beach are comprised of a mixture of sand and pebbles, with large expanses of sand being exposed as the tide recedes.
- Dogs are allowed on this beach with no restrictions.
Sandymouth Beach
Owned by the National Trust, Sandymouth is a stunningly beautiful stretch of coast. At low tide the sand extends north and south for about a mile, interspersed with fingers of rock. At high tide there is often not much more than a narrow pebbly beach with cliffs behind. If walking on the beach towards high tide take care not to be cut off.
- Dogs are allowed on this beach with no restrictions.
Crooklets Beach
Just a few minute’s walk from the Camelot Hotel in Bude, On the lowest of low tides it is possible to walk northwards along the water's edge for miles, perhaps with a little rock hopping, to the next two beaches.
- Dogs are not allowed on this beach from Easter day to October 1st.
